FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OMAHANS SEEK TO BUILD BRIDGES OF UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE

A coalition of civic groups is pointing to Saturday, September 1, for all persons and families in the metro Omaha area to recognize and celebrate diversity.

"That means our true diversity in culture, religion, background, orientation and in every other way," said Alan Potash of the Anti-Defamation League.

In support of their efforts, Mayor Mike Fahey has declared the date as "Diversity Day."

"Omaha has achieved great success by embracing people of various backgrounds and promoting an appreciation for diversity," Fahey’s proclamation says. "We call on all individuals to support and participate in activities that build bridges of understanding and acceptance across differences – not just for a day, but always."

Four civic groups are primary sponsors of Diversity Day events to be held on the site of the SeptemberFest in Parking Lot D of the Qwest Center. In addition to the Anti-defamation League, sponsors include Citizens for Equal Protection, the Latino Center of the Midlands and the Conference of Inclusive Communities. Other organizations are making spokespersons available on Diversity subjects.

"There’s always a temptation to focus on the things that divide us and our community," said Michael Gordon of the Citizens for Equal Protection. "But there is so much power in the positives of our diversity."

Potash and Gordon said the diversity rally will be conducted on the main stage at SeptemberFest Sept. 1, starting at 2 p.m. It will involve inspirational speakers and entertainment. The Omaha Federation of Labor is providing the site.
